Five Tips That Will See You Eating Well on Your Holiday

9Have you ever wondered why you never seem to see a tourist in your favourite, uber cool restaurant or cafe? When a place is so great, how come only the locals know about it?

According to Urbanspoon, the reason is that tourists need help finding great places to eat when in a new town or city. They are led to big tourist traps that spend a lot on marketing but little on food, and the experience the diner takes away is never quite true to the real thing.

To avoid this happening to you, try these tips for eating well on your next vacation:

1. Research restaurants

Don't restrict your research to Google Maps and instead check out restaurant reviews in local entertainment guides and newspapers to find out where the good places to eat are.

2. Judge a restaurant by its cover

Generally speaking, this is not a great thing to do, but when you are overseas in a non-English speaking country and the signage and menu you are looking at is written in English … walk away.

3. Tip well

Tipping generously will ensure you are well looked after and that you are greeted warmly on your next visit.

4. Eat away from the landmarks

It's rare that the best city restaurant is located directly next door to the museum, so try walking a few blocks to find something that takes your fancy.

5. Speak the correct language

Food terminology can vary around the world, so make sure you are asking for the right thing. For example, asking for a latte in Italy will get you a glass of warm milk.
