Wine is a complex thing. From tannins, to legs, to a whole bouquet of flavours, there’s plenty to know if you want to truly appreciate the differences between the wide variety of wines that are on offer for our tasting pleasure.

But where to start if you want to impress your friends who don’t know much about wine, or better yet, keep up with conversations amongst those who do?

Here are a few simple charts that’ll help you sound a little smarter when those mid-dinner wine convos pop up.

Wine colour

First things first: before you even taste the wine, there’s a lot to observe simply by looking at the wine’s colour (and we’re not just talking about determining if it’s red or white here). From age, to sweetness, to acidity and tannins, there’s plenty you can infer from looking at all the colours of the wine rainbow.

Wine temperature

Next up – apart from the drinking, one of the most important things you can do with your wine is to keep it at the correct temperature. This applies to both storing and serving your wine. Drinking your wine at the correct temperature is so important, in fact, that it’s the reason wine glasses have stems (if you were to hold it by the bowl, you would be warming the wine up from its desired temperature).

Use this guide to determine the perfect drinking temperature for wine, as well as the correct temperature to store your wine so you can serve it without compromising the flavour or aroma.
