Three Ways to Keep Knives at their Sharpest

Having a sharp knife can make all the difference when it comes to preparing meals efficiently, therefore it's essential to keep knives razor sharp. But with so many tools out there, how do you know what works best?

According to Taste, there are three useful tools for keeping knives at their sharpest:

1. Whetstone

A whetstone is a sharpening stone used for knives and other cutting tools by using a grind and honing method. For home use, look for a medium-grit stone. Holding the knife at a 10-15 degree angle and consistently stroke the knife backwards and forwards in a smooth motion.

(Tip: For an even better result, soak the whetstone in water for ten minutes before sharpening or until the bubbles disappear.)

2. Rods and steel

Ceramic and diamond rods and steels help to sharpen blade edges and are recommended for use in between stone sharpening. A ceramic rod will give a finer edge, yet is not as durable as a diamond rod and is slightly slower at sharpening.

3. Water wheels

Water wheels are a simple way to sharpen knives at home as they help you to keep knives at the correct angle. Simply fill the reservoir with water, run your knife back and forwards a few times and you're done.
