Have a December birthday coming up? Use our drop-down tool here to find the perfect place to celebrate.

Decemberist: A person who:

    • has to wait 11 months of the year to enjoy a celebration just for them
    • sends out a birthday invitation three months ahead of time only to find out that everyone is busy celebrating Christmas
    • receives just one present – usually a holiday decoration or unwanted regift
    • spends their birthday making small talk with their colleagues at the office do
    • tries to celebrate their birthday in June only to discover their heart's not really in it
    • is completely forgotten about

Being a Decemberist is tough. But it doesn't have to be. A birthday celebration in the midst of Christmas festivities can still be fun, you just have to know how to navigate it.

10 tips for making your December birthday special

1. Book ahead

If you're planning dinner with friends for your birthday, be sure to call the restaurant well in advance to secure a table. Restaurants book out quickly in December, so beat the rush and get in quick. The same goes if you're planning a party and require a hall.

2. Treat every party like it's your birthday party

Have drinks with the office staff? Pretend it's for your birthday. Playing golf with the other guys on site? Pretend it's for your birthday. Going to Aunt Shirley's house for a BBQ? Pretend it's for your birthday. Most people only get one day to celebrate, so count yourself lucky. You get a whole month!

3. Make use of holiday discounts

When every restaurant and function centre is competing for coveted Christmas parties, there are often discounts and special deals to enjoy. Hunt around and ask about group discounts, and you can save yourself heaps!

4. Remember that no matter how bad it gets, it was your mum that was stuck in hospital

Sure, you might be fighting for attention against a jolly soul in a red suit, but remember that your mum had it worse. While everyone was out partying and celebrating Christmas all those moons ago, she was in hospital giving birth. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, how about you say thanks to Mum instead?

5. Make the most of December themes

If you can't compete with Christmas festivities, you might as well try to embrace it. Throw a themed party and you have tons of options – Dirty Santa, Ugly Christmas Sweaters, Christmas Carol Karaoke, Gingerbread Decorating, 12 Days of Appetisers… the list is endless.

6. Look for the good

Yes there's some bad things about a December birthday, but there's also some great things. Chances are you might get some time off work, your family is all in town, everyone's in the festive spirit, and gastronomically speaking, December rocks!

7. Go far with your birthday money

If you're lucky enough to receive some birthday money or a voucher, hold off until the sales hit. You might just get more than was bargained for.

8. Keep it small

If trying to arrange dinner with all your friends is proving too difficult, accept that you can have a perfectly lovely night just you and your partner, mum and dad or best friend. Who says you have to go big on your birthday? Sometimes the smallest of celebrations are the nicest.

9. Enjoy the sun

Your birthday is in December, and that mean's summer! Make the most of the beautiful weather and choose an activity that embodies the summer spirit. Why not hop on a Sydney Seaplane to take in the views of the Harbour and Northern Beaches before landing at Jonah's Whale Beach for an incredible meal in the award-winning restaurant?

10. Treat yourself

If people really can't make it to your birthday, treat yourself. Take yourself to a movie, dine at your favourite restaurant, hit the shops, order some takeout, or crank up your favourite tunes and dance around the house. It's your day, so do whatever you want!

Tips for making your loved one's December birthday special

1. Choose birthday gift wrap

Never, ever give a birthday gift that's wrapped up in red and green Christmas paper. Let's repeat that – never, ever give a birthday gift wrapped in red and green Christmas paper.

2. Choose a "birthday" gift

If you must insist on buying just one gift, make sure it's a birthday-style gift. Don't pool your money in to buy an extra special Christmas hamper.

3. Give a gift that will last beyond the holidays

If your friend is worried that their birthday is being lost amidst the Yuletide, buy them something they can use after the festivities are over. A Good Food Gift Card makes an excellent gift for those with December birthdays, as it can be used once the craziness has died down, and gives the recipient a second chance at some celebrations.

4. Put up some balloons

Never underestimate the power of balloons. Even if your home is covered in Christmas lights and tinsel, you can still manage to throw around some balloons to represent the birthday boy or girl.

5. Create a birthday feast

If you're cooking for the birthday boy or girl or are having guests over for dinner, be sure to serve food that's not lumped in with Christmas. Avoid the turkey, forget the glazed ham, and whatever you do, don't serve plum pudding instead of birthday cake.

6. Be sure to ring

Even if you have all the family coming over for Christmas dinner and you are frantic with the preparations, don't forget to call your friend for their birthday. It doesn't have to be a long call – all your friend wants is acknowledgement.

7. Play a birthday song

As much as you love singing along to "Silent Night" and "All I Want for Christmas", be sure to switch the tunes to something a bit more birthday appropriate. Why not try The Beatles' Birthday Song or go all out and create a birthday medley playlist?

8. Tell them how special they are

If you don't have time for a call on their birthday, at least send a text or email to let them know you are thinking of them and you are sending birthday love. Better yet, send a card.

9. Don't claim you're broke

All too often, people celebrating their December birthdays are met with comments such as, "I'm sorry I can't come out for drinks, I've spent all my money on Christmas gifts". If you can't afford to go out drinking, suggest something else such as a walk on the beach followed by a coffee. A more affordable activity is better than no activity at all.

10. Throw a surprise party in January

If you notice your friend or partner is feeling a little down in the dumps about their December birthday, consider throwing them a surprise party in January. Alternatively you could discuss it with them and spend the month of December planning together instead of celebrating.
