On a chilly day, there is nothing quite like the warmth of a roaring fire, the richness of a good red wine and the ambience of friends coming together to ward off the winter wind. Find a pub that offers beautiful food to compliment and you're onto a winner.

While traditionally known for it's laid-back hotels and bars, Australia is home to some fantastic winter pubs which serve mouth-wateringly good winter food. Here's our pick of the top five places to fill your belly this winter:

Bank Hotel, NSW

The Bank Hotel is a real locals favourite, situated in the heart of Newtown's bustling King Street. Home to great live music and an energetic atmosphere, the Bank Hotel is a perfect place for a bite with friends. Known for its delicious share plates, you'll also find pizza, bun stuffers and a range of scrumptious seafood treats. The kids are well catered for and the chef's daily specials will quickly dispel any winter blues.

Currently voted the best pub dining room in Victoria, Melbourne's The Grand Richmond is the city's only pub restaurant to receive a Good Food Guide chef hat. Classically Italian, the dining room is elegant, yet fun, and the buzzing lounge bar completes the picture.

The Grand Richmond centres itself on serving both quality ingredients and value and if it's winter belly warmers you're after, you can't go past their Coniglio Del Giorno (Rabbit Dish of the Day) or Gnocchi with Brown Butter and Sage. If it's value you are after, you can't go past Wagyu Wednesdays (a wagyu sirloin with a glass of postales malbec) for $25 or Slow Cooked Sundays (tagine with a glass of righbank wine) for $22.

Middle Park Hotel, Victoria

If it is classic pub food that gets your taste buds tingling, you will love the real and robust food at the Middle Park Hotel. With chef Stephen Burke at the helm, Middle Park has brought back traditional, well respected food and showcases how best to take food straight from the paddock and on to the plate. Classic pub offerings include steaks, freshly baked pies, scotch eggs, offal and of course, the roast dinner. Find whole joints of boutique lamb, tender beef and crackling pork and finish it all off with a Treacle Tart, Bread and Butter Pudding or a Whisky and Coffee Fool.
