In terms of sipping champagne, Australians have risen to be ranked as the sixth biggest drinkers of the beverage in the world. Last year, Australians came in at number seven.
Sales reports from the Comite Champagne (CIVC) 2013 figures reveal that 6.02 million bottles of champagne were imported into the country, up 11.4% from the previous year. However, while Australians embrace the bubbles more, the French are losing their love for the drop, with sales dropping by 2.3% in the country.
According to Good Food, the reason behind the rise in Australian sales could be because champagne is more affordable than ever. For the first time, Aussies can now pick up a bottle of champagne for under $50, with prices going as low as $33.
Another reason could be the increase in growers, as well as the addition of more sommeliers in restaurants. More grower houses and knowledgeable sales folk are giving consumers exciting new alternatives and the days of simply ordering a bottle of Veuve Clicquot are going. Independent champagne producers are stimulating the market.
