Remember these 5 Food Trends?

shutterstock_198612998It's no secret that food trends come and go as quickly as fashion's acid wash jeans and flares. Recent times have seen featured food and drinks gracing television shows and working their way into high end magazines. Here's a few foodie trends that have hit their popularity peak in the last few years:

1. Macarons: You don't have to think back far to remember when these were being heralded as the most exclusive treat on the block. Made famous in large part by Adriano Zumbo, these little guys were  notoriously difficult to create and good ones were hard to find. They came in hundreds of different colours and flavours, extending to such odd offerings as pandan and rice pudding or coke. However, the novelty wore off when McDonald's started selling them.

2. Pork Belly: This pork cut has been a favourite among Asian cooking for years, and then the rest of us caught on. Nowadays, pork belly is the standard pork dish on a lot of Aussie restaurant menus.

3. Drinks in jars: Bars who were trying to be quirky and cool took up this trend, gaining them some sustainability cred. Drinks and food in jars have now taken on a life of their own and you may find desserts, mueslis and juices in old jam jars. At least they're being eco-friendly and up-cycling.

4. Salted desserts: There were salted caramel macarons, salted brownies, pretzel-topped doughnuts, salted peanut butter cookies, even salted coconut ice cream. Yes, there was certainly an odd fascination with mixing savoury and sweet, but now it is starting to feel a little little less cutting-edge flavour combination and a little more overdone.

5. Froyo: Frozen yogurt joints graced nearly every street corner and shopping mall. The yogurt was certainly alluring, but the novelty of being able to fill your own cup and then cover it with ill-matching toppings to your heart's content was the main attraction. Froyo is one of the latest trends that is starting to wane.
