Etiquette Guide for a Successful Business Lunch

shutterstock_146297840The Australian business culture is relatively relaxed when it comes to social rules, but every so often, you meet with a stickler for etiquette. While sharing a bottle of wine and some great food can go a long way in making a client feel confident and comfortable around you, it's good to be aware of basic business lunch etiquette to keep relations on the right path. So what exactly is expected of you?

According to the Business Insider, a business meeting is all about etiquette, no matter where you choose to meet. Even if you choose to dine over a Big Mac at McDonalds, there are certain rules that you should still keep in mind:

For ladies

1. Sit or stand only. Do not lean on objects as you speak.

2. Sip from the same spot on the glass to prevent lipstick marks.

3. A handbag should be placed beside the inside left leg of the chair and not be obstructive.

For men

1. Keep your jacket on unless your host takes theirs off.

2. Build up your knowledge of wine and how to order it according to the food selected.

3. Hold doors open and let the lady walk the stairs first.

For both

1. The host orders the wine and should always pay the bill.

2. Don't get drunk.

3. Wait until the mains arrive before talking business.

4. Personal conversations such as political choice, sexual preference and age should be avoided.

5. Take your time eating to finish with the rest of the table.
