The Trending Ingredients Taking Over Restaurant Menus

shutterstock_158343896Just as they do in fashion and interiors, food trends come and go. 2013 was all about South American and Asian flavours, with kimchi and Wagyu beef burritos popping up everywhere. This year, it's fruit that is hotting up our tables.

According to the Business Insider, fruit is one of the key ingredients in restaurant cooking right now, with pear the number one star. Served as a side to a cheese platter, blended in a margarita or tossed in a salad, pear is being incorporated into a number of restaurant menus.

Brie is another ingredient, being served on flatbread or as part of a French baguette sandwich. Other breads being used include ciabatta and Brioche, putting a European twist to the average sandwich. One popular bite is a turkey breast, brie and pepper jam sandwich, commonly seen in bakeries and cafes.

As for the hottest herb, it's all about refreshingly cool mint, with the mint julep cocktail being a popular choice in bars.
