Five Wine Etiquette Tips You Might Not Know

13It's one thing to appreciate a good wine when it appears at the table, but do you know how to drink it? According to The Daily Meal, there are five wine etiquette tips every wine drinker should know:

1. Seek the advice of the sommelier

You don't have to pretend to know which wine perfectly suits a certain dish, that's what the sommelier is there for. If he is kind enough to offer you advice, take it – no one knows the wine list better than the sommelier.

2. It's okay to add ice

If your wine isn't quite chilled enough, popping some ice into your glass is perfectly acceptable providing it is clean. Wine is mostly made up of water, so a few extra cubes won't make a difference to the taste.

3. Chill your reds

An overwarm red is not that pleasant so pour yourself a glass of chilled red wine, which will quickly begin to warm up. This is a much faster way of reaching the ideal temperature than placing a warm bottle in the fridge to cool.

4. Use an ice bucket

Just as a red will warm quickly, a white will too and that is not acceptable. To keep your ice cold for longer, try sprinkling salt over the top and adding a touch of cold water.

5. Buy what you love

If you find a wine that you absolutely love then stick with it. There is nothing wrong with ordering the same bottle every time – it allows for more time to enjoy the wine when you don't need to peruse the menu!
